Are You Telling Too Much in Your Story?
One of the most common questions I get from speakers and leaders alike is this:
“How do I know how much detail to include in my story or speech?”
It’s a great question, because too little detail leaves your audience confused. But too much? That’s when you lose them entirely.
Here’s the secret: details should serve clarity and connection, not just completeness.
If a story starts to feel like a full autobiography, or if your audience needs a timeline and map to follow, it’s time to zoom out. On the flip side, don’t skip over the emotional heartbeat of your story just to be brief.
So how do you strike the balance?
👉 Ask yourself this: What does my audience need to feel in order to act?
Every sentence should move them closer to that goal.
This is one of the core principles I teach, because charisma lives in both what you say and what you leave out.
